The LMC extends its deepest condolences to the family of former Missouri Sen. Phil Curls, who died last Friday after a long battle with numerous illnesses.
In addition to being a prominent leader who advanced the interests of Kansas City's urban core and who consistently supported the LMC's positions, Phil was also a friend whose wry perspective and extensive experience generated great advice. He also bulit leaders around him, including his wife and new City Councilwoman Melba Curls, his niece Rep. Kikki Curls and many other family members involved in leadership roles.
Phil, a Rockhurst University graduate, was also a critical member of Kansas City's once very powerful Senate delegation. With fellow Sens. Harry Wiggins, Ronnie DePasco (and before Ronnie, Henry Panethiere) and Ed Quick, KC provided a cadre of leaders able to overcome the historically rural and St. Louis-dominated Senate to have a real impact not just for KC causes but overall state policy. Only Quick is still with us, and he also remains in public service as Clay County Presiding Commissioner. (Perhaps that tradition is continuing--Sen. Victor Callahan was named in the the St. Louis Business Journal as one of the four most powerful state legislators).
While we are grateful that Phil was able to see Melba and Kiki elected to their positions in the past year, we will miss his wise counsel and know his family will miss much more. Services are scheduled for St. James United Methodist Church for Friday; time and other details to come.
