We are sorry to learn of the death of Lillian McKittrick. Lillian was a path-breaking labor leader in the ILGWU and a force behind getting labor involved in the community. Visitation is 9-11 am Saturday at Jamison Memorial CME Temple, 315 Benton Blvd. More information is available from Lawrene Jones Funeral Home, 816-921-1800.

LMC Endorses KCK Sales Tax

The LMC Board of Directors has unanimously endorsed the proposed 3/8 cent sales tax increase for Kansas City, Kansas on the April 13 ballot. Expected to generate $6 million per year, the tax will support police and fire department programs and pay for street repair and resurfacing, curbs and sidewalks. The increase would need to be reapproved in 10 years.

Construction Committee Meets April 8 at Different Time, Location

The Construction Industry Committee will meet next at 7 a.m., Thursday, April 8 at IBEW Local 124, 301 E 103rd Terrace (I-435 & Holmes).  Immediately following the meeting participates can attend the Green Conference at the IBEW-NECA Training Center next door (see earlier post for registration details).

•The Construction Summit was successful.  In addition to the content, the event netted $14,309 each the LMC and for NICE.
•M/S/C to ask the Kansas City Council to postpone final consideration of Ordinance 100177 so that the industry can further investigate and develop consensus, and to have an attorney review for the implications particularly regarding prevailing wage enforcement.
•Kansas SB 401 is still being considered.  It would reopen Kansas gaming law and is opposed by the LMC.  Members are urged to contact Kansas senators to express or reiterate opposition.
•Further research will be done regarding KS SB 567 and MO SB 1013.
•M/S/C to recommend that the LMC endorse the 3/8th cent sales tax to be voted on by Kansas City, Kansas on April 13.
•The LMC is supporting the Decline to Sign campaign regarding the Missouri initiative petition that would hold a statewide vote requiring votes to repeal the KCMO earnings tax, and urges members to spread information about the campaign, provide funds and volunteers for it. A web site with details is at unitedformissouri priorities.org.
•NICE has more than 400 students signed up for Crayons to CAD and expects 800-1000 middle and high students at the April 27 iBuild Showcase.  Booths and volunteers are being sought.

Construction Committee Meets March 11

The LMC Construction Industry Committee will meet next at 8 a.m., Thursday, March 11 at Mark One Electric Co., Inc., 909 Troost.

The committee will meet for one time only at a different time and location for April.  The April 8 meeting will take place at 7 a.m. at IBEW Local 124, 301 E 103rd Terrace, so that participants can attend the green conference taking place at the adjoining IBEW-NECA Training Center.

KCMO Council Honors Mid-Level Grad

The Kansas City, Mo. Council today honored Mid-Level Leadership Program grad Ted Turney upon his retirement.  Ted served more than 30 years in the city's Water Department manager and had a significant impact on the department's operations.  He also kept in touch with his fellow Mid-Level graduates and with the LMC after his participation.

Congratulations to Ted on a well-earned retirement and recognition from the city.
