Construction Industry Steering Team Summary of Minutes

•Introductions and thanks to Rosie Biondo and Mark One for hosting.
•Oz Qureshi presented an update on YouthBuild. YouthBuild is a construction training program for at-risk 17-24 year olds and is endorsed by the national Building Trades. YouthBuild currently seeks input from contractors on expectations for workers. It is currently building a LEED-certified house, with assistance from Bricklayers and Cement Masons.
•The Prevailing Wage subcommittee met and Kansas City, Mo. continues to work on improving enforcement. The next meeting is 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, City Hall 8th floor.
•Reports from KCMO indicate that KBR continues to be used but there is doubt that it is complying with proper procedures The contract is up for renewal in April; members are urged to discuss the issue with Council members and candidates.
•Attorney Jimmy Bowers will present on the impact of revised KCMO development code at the January committee meeting.
•The attempt to develop an objective study of the KCMO earnings tax impact has been unable to raise adequate funds, so contributors will receive refunds. A major effort will be required to retain the tax at the April 2011 election.
•Kansas Gov.-Elect Brownback has appointed State Sen. Karen Brownlee as Secretary of Labor.
•The Missouri Tax Credit Review Commission has issued its recommendations. It will be up to the legislature to act on them.
•M/S/C to recommend that the LMC oppose Missouri SB 1, the “right-to-work” bill. Union leaders are meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16 at Argosy Casino to develop strategy and will approach business and community leaders for support after that.
•NICE will hold iBuild April 28. Education Director Schilling is meeting with schools to boost participation in Crayons to CAD and iBuild, and will train KCMO teachers Jan. 18.
•Promotion has begun for the fixmyhome.com site. Contractors are encouraged to contact Greg Chastain (greg@sheetmetal2.org) to become listed on the site. Financing options including United Labor Credit Union are also going to be listed.
•The Carpenters District Councils of St. Louis and Kansas City merged into the Carpenters District Council of St. Louis and Vicinity. Joe Hudson and Dennis Joyce expressed interest in working more closely with the construction community and participating actively in the LMC. The committee welcomed participation by the Carpenters.
•The next meeting will be Jan. 13, 2011, 8 a.m. at Mark One Electric Co., Inc., 909 Troost.
