•M/S/C to approve the Financial Report subject to audit.

•M/S/C to develop a revised operating agreement with Rockhurst University.

•M/S/C to make no changes in the LMC’s endorsements for the 2012 general election.

•M/S/C to sign a three-year contract with Oakwood Country Club for the Craig Whitaker Memorial Golf Tournament and to set a 2013 date.

•M/S/C to return to Argosy Casino for the 2013 Anniversary Celebration and Awards Dinner and to set a date on or about April 11.

•The next board meeting will be 8 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, location tba.

The LMC Construction Industry Committee will next meet at 8 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 8 at Mark One Electric Co., Inc.

Longtime LMC supporter Herb Johnson will be honored for his service at a dinner Nov. 30 at Argosy Casino. Herb is retiring this year as Missouri AFL-CIO secretary-treasurer. Before his election to that post he was a longtime leader at IAM Lodge 1650 (representing workers at the TWA-American Airlines overhaul base) and served on the LMC's executive committee. We greatly appreciate Herb's strong support of the LMC and its mission.

Congratulations to LMC member McCownGordon Construction and associate member Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City for recognition by the Arts Council of Greater Kansas City. The two organizations will be recognized with the ArtsKC award for roles in the council's workplace giving program.

LMC Backs MO Propositions A & B, Opposes Amendment 3

The Labor-Management Council of Greater Kansas City urges Missourians to vote Yes on Propositions A and B and No on Constitutional Amendment 3 on the Nov. 6 ballot.

 Proposition B would generate funding for education and health care needs through an increase in the cigarette tax.  “Proposition B is a win-win.  Increasing the cigarette tax will bring much needed funds to Missouri students while helping to decrease smoking rates, saving lives and money” noted Bob Jacobi, LMC executive director.  “The funds generated by Proposition B will be a real increase in school funding to boost our state’s economic competitiveness” he added.

 Proposition A would return the St. Louis police department to local control.  “Community leaders in St. Louis have asked for this change, and we respect their readiness for local control of the police department” Jacobi said.

 Constitutional Amendment 3 would enhance gubernatorial power in the appointment of Supreme and Appeals Court judges.  “This amendment would upend the careful balance in judicial appointments.  We support the nonpartisan Missouri plan for judicial selection and oppose this change” Jacobi added.

 A nonprofit association based at Rockhurst University, the Labor-Management Council seeks to enhance collaboration and trust between labor and management.  Positions on public issues are taken only when at least 75 percent of board members representing both labor and management agree, reflecting broad consensus among the business and labor communities in the region.

 The LMC, founded in 1979, has more than 80 member organizations including corporations, unions, governments and nonprofits.

•The meeting on the KCMO Crime Lab/East Patrol project scheduled for Oct. 15 has been postponed.  A new date is not yet available.

•M/S/C to recommend that the LMC endorse Missouri Proposition B to increase the cigarette tax to fund education and health care.

The LMC is saddened to report the death of Gene Standifer. Gene was a longtime U.S. Dept. of Labor official in Kansas City who championed the role of labor-management cooperation and workforce diversity. His service included time as a Jackson County legislator as well. We will miss his insights and good humor. Services for Gene, 86, include visitation, 9-11 a.m., and funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at St. Monica Catholic Church, 1616 Paseo Blvd. Burial will be in Leavenworth National Cemetery on Monday, Oct. 15, 12:30p.m. Our prayers go out to his family.
