•Welcome to Dennis Bajowski, who will succeed Gary Eagan as Business Manager for Sprinkler Fitters Local 314 on Jan. 1.
•Welcome to Roeland Park Mayor Adrienne Foster attending for the first time.
•Discussion of draft KCMO Contract Compliance ordinance. Management has developed a proposal and the minority contractor organizations are meeting with craft unions. It was noted that all have essentially the same objective and now are working to develop a proposal with broad industry support.
•A list of area legislative candidates successful in the Nov. 6 election was distributed. The Missouri House is selecting leaders now (note: Elected have been Speaker Tim Jones, Speaker Pro Tem Jason Smith, Majority Floor Leader John Diehl and Assistant Floor Leader Mike Cierpiot.) We can expect continued, though perhaps not as aggressive, moves regarding prevailing wage and right-to-work in Missouri. Kansas also has many new legislators.
•The Jackson County Legislature approved use of the Kansas City Construction Partners on the Independence courthouse renovations, with bids going out now and goal to have construction completed before Labor Day.
•Kansas City, Mo., considers the Workforce Board reauthorization today. The ordinance has numerous improvements. However the Council passed last week Committee Substitute for Ordinance No. 120944 sponsored by Jermaine Reed, which establishes a Hiring Bid Incentive Program for demolition contractors. There are many questions about the ordinance. Committee members are asked to read it and share questions and concerns with Bob Jacobi so the group can develop a response to the ordinance. Contact the LMC office for a copy if needed.
•The mother of Genario Ruiz, a member of U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver’s staff and mother-in-law of Theresa Garza Ruiz, Laborers Local 264 and Jackson County Legislature, was killed an an auto accident earlier this week. Services are Monday morning. Contact Local 264 for details (816-361-1000). Our condolences and prayers are with the Ruiz family.
•The economic outlook for next year was discussed. Continued efforts by contractors and unions are needed to improve competitiveness particularly on private sector work in addition to KCCP. Mayor Foster noted that unions and union contractors would benefit from increased community outreach, noting housing shortages in Kansas where the energy business is booming. The discussion will continue at future meetings.
