•Introductions and thanks to Rosie Biondo and Mark One for hosting.
•Don Greenwell introduced Rita Cortes, who is now working with the Builders’ Association on labor relations since Tim Papuga joined Wilson McShane.
•The streetcar construction contract for Kansas City, Mo., will be voted on today at the City Council.
•A presentation will take place Oct. 8 on a proposed contractor compliance program modeled on the city and school district of Los Angeles. The facilities director for the LA School District, who initially opposed the program and now supports it, will be the speaker. More details to come.
•The Missouri legislative veto session concluded with 10 of the 29 vetoes overridden, but several key issues did not survive including tax cuts, unemployment comp changes, workers comp changes, public employees’ dues restrictions among others. John Diehl was elected speaker-in-waiting to succeed Tim Jones beginning with the 2015 session.
•The Kansas City Construction Partners recently completed a successful project renovating the historic Truman Courthouse in Independence, continues work on the Black & Veatch project and is in discussions with other potential projects.
•The National Institute for Construction Excellence expects several announcements soon, and is holding pilot programs to expose teachers and high school seniors to apprenticeship programs.
•The organized industry is doing more to market its advantages and community contributions, and more efforts are needed. The Building Trades, Sheet Metal Workers and SMACNA, IBEW and other efforts were praised.
•Workforce issues will soon come into focus again as the construction economy recovers. Discussions on recruitment particularly minority and women continue.
•The next meeting will be 8 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 10 at Mark One Electric Co., Inc., 909 Troost, KCMO.
