The Labor-Management Council of Greater Kansas City

The LMC's Construction Industry Committee won't meet in July, as many members will be attending the Mid-America Labor/Management Conference. The committee will resume its schedule Aug. 14 at 8 a.m. at Mark One Electric Co., Inc.

The new location for the Mid-America Labor/Management Conference, Camden on the Lake, is essentially full for the July 6-9 conference. However, overflow rates can be found at the Lodge of the Four Seasons and Country Club hotel. And opportunities for registration and sponsorship are still available. Check www.malmc.org for details.

Details proposals for what a 3/4 cent transportation sales tax would do are now available. The Missouri issue will be on the Aug. 5 ballot. The LMC supported bringing the issue to a vote, as transportation is the state's critical economic asset if properly maintained and grown. Public hearings began yesterday. •Introductions and thanks to Rosie Biondo and Mark One for hosting.

•The July 10 committee meeting will be cancelled.  The September 11 meeting will begin at noon instead of 8 a.m. and will be held at the Builders’ Training Center rather than Mark One for an investment summit.  The August meeting will be same time, same place.

•The KCMO Crime Lab/East Patrol project has been meeting its goals.  Visitors to the employment trailer have been directed to other opportunities besides the jobs on the project.

•The Missouri legislature completed its session.  The LMC’s agenda did well (see www.labormanagementkc.typepapd.com for a summary) though the Governor vetoed the bill including data center tax credits and opposes the transportation sales tax that will be on the August ballot.  An override of the Governor’s vetoes on tax issues may be attempted in September.

•The Kansas City Construction Partners is growing with newly-strengthened documents and the Jackson County Annex project soon to begin.  Other significant projects are possible soon.  Several contractors have been changed out due to KCCP provisions at current and past projects.  The funding model for KCCP must change, though, for it to be sustained.  A meeting will be held soon to develop a new funding plan; committee members interested in participating can contact Bob Jacobi or Troy Carlson.  Terry Akins was thanked for his leadership in reviving KCCP.

 •NICE’s iBuild Showcase next year is already set for April 14 at Bartle Hall.  The 2014 iBuild showed growth in the number of students, sponsors and booths.

•The KCMO streetcar project is waiting for permits to break ground on the maintenance facility, while tracks and infrastructure are being prepared.  The project has a strong outreach program to affected locations along the route.

•The KCMO energy efficiency project is hosting a summit June 30, 8-10 a.m. at the Greater Kansas City Chamber board room at Union Station.

•BOMA is organizing a metro-wide conference for city code and fire service officials.

•The Kansas City Contractors Expo will be Oct. 30 at the Downtown Marriott Muehlbach Tower.  Sponsors are being sought.  The Builders’ Association, ASA and ASPE are sponsoring.

•The Mid-America Labor/Management Conference is in a new location this year, Camden on the Lake.  Attendees are urged to get room and conference registrations in soon.

The 29th annual Mid-America Labor/Management Conference is set for July 6-9 at a new location, Camden on the Lake in Lake Ozark, Mo.

Keynote speakers will include Allison Beck, deputy director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service; Marty Malloy, recently retired vice president of labor relations for Ford Motor Co. and president-elect of the Labor and Employment Relations Association; Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander and State Treasurer Clint Zweifel; Doug Sterbenz, chief operating officer for Westar Energy; LuAnn Glaser, acting director of ADR for Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service; Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future and more.

Workshops will cover processing National Labor Relations Board cases, the impact of the Affordable Care Act, joint labor-management initiatives in safety, training and market share, worker misclassification, conflict resolution, a mock mediation among others. The conference’s annual golf tournament and the conference banquet will be held July 8.

The new location features top-level guest rooms, entertainment and will be exclusive to the conference. Rooms are limited, though, so conference attendees are urged to get reservations as soon as possible.

Past LMC honoree John Bluford, soon-to-retire CEO and Truman Medical Centers, described his career and leadership philosophy to a packed room at a Kansas City Public Library event June 3. Bluford noted that Truman’s emphasis on customer service, quality of care and a pleasing environment for workers and patients have been key to its ability to survive and thrive in a very challenging environment. He spent time listening to TMC workers and observing hospital operations, and applied his Hope, Love and Mission leadership approach. Bluford also noted what he learned from visiting hospitals around the nation as president of the American Hospital Association board, chair of the Greater KC Chamber board and other leadership role. After his time as Truman CEO ends, he will be focusing on his program to mentor future leaders in hospital administration.
