Construction Industry Steering Team Summary of Minutes
8 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, Mark One Electric Co., Inc.
Attending: Sam Alpert, KC Borden, Theresa Garza Ruiz, Don Greenwell, Jerry Helmick, Scott Hoisington, Joe Hudson, Dennis Joyce, Greg Lever, Rick Rodriguez, Colleen White, Bob Jacobi.
•Introductions and thanks to Rosie Biondo and Mark One for hosting.
•The September 11 meeting will begin at noon instead of 8 a.m. and will be held at the Builders’ Training Center rather than Mark One for an investment summit. The October meeting will be same time, same place, 8 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9.
•The August primary saw the Missouri transportation tax and KCMO streetcar extension defeated. Only a few incumbents lost. The legislative composition in both states is likely to be very similar to the current situation. Several issues will also be on the Missouri ballot. A summary and preview is attached.
•Jackson County has passed its MBE/WBE ordinance. Full implementation will follow a disparity study co-sponsored with KCMO, KCPS and KCATA. Theresa Garza Ruiz sponsored the ordinance.
•NICE has expanded its board and is working to engage more students at the high school level. It is also seeking United Way donors to designate it for all or part of their donation. The next iBuild Showcase is set for April 14, 2015 at Bartle Hall.
•The City Energy Project is expanding its efforts to include all commercial buildings to benchmark energy efficiency, encourage retrofits and recognize efficient buildings. The project is finding that Kansas City is already more advanced then expected. Some cities are passing or considering mandated public reporting of benchmarking information, but the KC advisory group prefers to maintain a voluntary program.
•Contractors on the One Light downtown KCMO residential project are experiencing very strict compliance efforts by HUD.
•The KCMO EDC and TIF Commission are experiencing conflict, which may affect future development efforts.
•The KCMO Streetcar project is proceeding well.
