The LMC's Construction Industry Committee will next meet Thursday, Nov. 13, 8 a.m. at Mark One Electric Co., Inc., 909 Troost, KCMO.

The Labor-Management Council's 36th Anniversary Celebration and 16th Annual Awards Dinner is now set for Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Argosy Casino.

In addition to sponsorships,reservations and program ads, the LMC is now accepting nominations for the Leadership in Labor/Management Collaboration and Service to the Labor-Management Council awards that will be announced and presented at the event. LMC officers and open board positions will also be elected. Contact the LMC for more information and for reservation and award nomination forms.

The LMC is saddened by the death of Phil Kirk, retired chair of LMC member DST Realty. His leadership was vital in revitalizing the west side of downtown KCMO during the 1980s and '90s, as well as many civic and charitable projects. He continued his active role after retirement through his death. Our condolences to his family and his associates at DST and throughout the community.

•Thanks to Bret Bonge and KCPL for hosting.

•M/S/C to approve the financial report. The Public Official Reception net is above budget and membership is growing.

•The LMC will take no position on Nov. 4 ballot issues. Scott Hoisington will draft an update of the Issues agenda to set principles that will guide specific positions once the legislative sessions are underway, and the Board will vote on the issues agenda in January.

•Suggestions for the Mid-America Labor/Management Conference include a focus on ways to provide good but economically competitive benefits, and how solutions were implemented.

•The Craig Whitaker Golf Tournament was successful, with 64 golfers and a net slightly above budget. The tournament will return to Oakwood in 2015.

•The Public Officials Reception drew about 175 including more than 50 elected officials. The venue was ideal. For future receptions, the Board will be asked to help ensure that everyone attending is engaged in conversation.

•The target date and location for the Anniversary Celebration and Awards Dinner for 2015 is April 16, Argosy Casino.

•Discussion began for determining a slate for officers and board; a vote will be taken at the January meeting. The Carpenters District Council will be invited to a board position and elected in January or April, depending upon the representative’s availability.

•M/S/C to purchase a digital camera for events.

•The next board meeting will be Jan. 15, 2015, location TBA.

The Labor-Management Council of Greater Kansas City hosted more than 150 governmental, business and labor leaders at its annual Public Officials Reception Oct. 9 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.  Photos from the event are in the album at left, 2014 Public Officials Reception. 

Elected and appointed public officials from all levels of government, both states and both parties gathered to network in the spectacular Kauffman Center.  And many attendees stayed after the reception to see a dress rehearsal of Alice in Wonderland by the Kansas City Ballet at the Ballet’s invitation.  The performance opened the next night.

•Discussion of issues on the November Missouri and Kansas City, Mo., ballots.  The committee concluded that it would not make recommendations on any of the issues.

•NICE is expanding its high school programs, planning for the Crayons to CAD middle school program and the next iBuild, expanding its board and fund raising.

•BOMA is hosting a Codes Conference including building and fire codes administrators from throughout the metro area and the industry.  It will be Thursday, Oct. 16, 1-4 p.m. at 2 Emanuel Cleaver Blvd.  RSVPs can be made at [email protected].

•Residential development in the area, especially Downtown KCMO, is exploding.  The committee discussed some of the policy implications.

•The South Kansas City Alliance will host the developers and firms during the Planning for Growth Economic Development Summit from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Avila University, 11901 Wornall Road. Admission is free, but registration is required at www.southkcalliance.org.  Presentations will include Cerner Corp.’s Three Trails Campus, Burns & McDonnell’s headquarters expansion, the Oxford on the Blue research park, CenterPoint Properties’ redevelopment of the Bannister Federal Complex and its CenterPoint-KCS Intermodal Park, NorthPoint Development’s Three Trails Industrial Park, and the redevelopment of a former Kmart site as a CubeSmart self-storage facility.

The summit will open with a panel discussion involving the developers and leading employers that have chosen south Kansas City locations, followed by comments from Mayor Sly James.

The event’s keynote speaker will be Jim DeLisle, director of the Lewis White Center for Real Estate at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Bloch School of Management. He will discuss the area’s resources, growth opportunities and action steps for building on the blitz of development activity.

The summit also will include several breakout sessions. They will include:

1. Fostering Community Led Entrepreneurship & The Building Blocks of Entrepreneurship; speaker: Seth Meinzen, managing partner of EvisThrive.
2. Neighborhood Revitalization: It Takes a Village; speakers, Dean Katerndahl of the Mid-America Regional Council and Larry Marsh of Nextdoor.
3. South Kansas City Housing Statistics & Trends; speakers: Derek Ramsay of the Kansas City Regional Association of Realtors and Dan Whitney of Landmarketing Inc.
4. Green $KC; speakers Andrew Tate of Brightergy LLC, Jill Erickson of Heartland Conservation Alliance, Lynn Youngblood of Blue River Watershed Association and Kristin Riott of Bridging the Gap.
5. Taking the Lead in Preparing the Next Generation to Meet Employer Demands through College/Career Readiness; speakers: Dennis Carpenter of the Hickman Mills school district, Merlyne Starr of the University of Phoenix, Ron Sleptiza of Avila University and the Rev. Dennis Solis of CrossPoint Community Church.

The LMC's Public Officials Reception is set for Thursday, Oct. 9 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. More than 150 government, business and labor leaders are attending the 5-7 p.m. event. Contact the LMC for sponsorship information or to RSVP.

The Mid-America Labor/Management Conference is scheduled to be held July 5-8, 2015 at Camden on the Lake. The conference is also likely to continue its stay at Camden in 2016 and '17. Planning is now underway for the 30th anniversary conference in 2015 and suggestions for topics and speakers are welcome.

Mark One Electric Co., Inc. will have Jennifer Jo Cobb, local racing star, drive its truck in Saturday's Nationwide Truck series at the Kansas Speedway.

Congrats to Vic Terranella, president of Teamsters Local 41, for his appointment to the Kansas City, Mo., Planned Industrial Expansion Authority. And thanks to Ed Drake, IBEW Local 124, for his many years of service on the PIEA.
