Construction Industry Steering Team Summary of Minutes

•Discussion of issues on the November Missouri and Kansas City, Mo., ballots. The committee concluded that it would not make recommendations on any of the issues.
•NICE is expanding its high school programs, planning for the Crayons to CAD middle school program and the next iBuild, expanding its board and fund raising.
•BOMA is hosting a Codes Conference including building and fire codes administrators from throughout the metro area and the industry. It will be Thursday, Oct. 16, 1-4 p.m. at 2 Emanuel Cleaver Blvd. RSVPs can be made at [email protected].
•Residential development in the area, especially Downtown KCMO, is exploding. The committee discussed some of the policy implications.
•The South Kansas City Alliance will host the developers and firms during the Planning for Growth Economic Development Summit from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Avila University, 11901 Wornall Road. Admission is free, but registration is required at www.southkcalliance.org. Presentations will include Cerner Corp.’s Three Trails Campus, Burns & McDonnell’s headquarters expansion, the Oxford on the Blue research park, CenterPoint Properties’ redevelopment of the Bannister Federal Complex and its CenterPoint-KCS Intermodal Park, NorthPoint Development’s Three Trails Industrial Park, and the redevelopment of a former Kmart site as a CubeSmart self-storage facility.
The summit will open with a panel discussion involving the developers and leading employers that have chosen south Kansas City locations, followed by comments from Mayor Sly James.
The event’s keynote speaker will be Jim DeLisle, director of the Lewis White Center for Real Estate at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Bloch School of Management. He will discuss the area’s resources, growth opportunities and action steps for building on the blitz of development activity.
The summit also will include several breakout sessions. They will include:
- Fostering Community Led Entrepreneurship & The Building Blocks of Entrepreneurship; speaker: Seth Meinzen, managing partner of EvisThrive.
- Neighborhood Revitalization: It Takes a Village; speakers, Dean Katerndahl of the Mid-America Regional Council and Larry Marsh of Nextdoor.
- South Kansas City Housing Statistics & Trends; speakers: Derek Ramsay of the Kansas City Regional Association of Realtors and Dan Whitney of Landmarketing Inc.
- Green $KC; speakers Andrew Tate of Brightergy LLC, Jill Erickson of Heartland Conservation Alliance, Lynn Youngblood of Blue River Watershed Association and Kristin Riott of Bridging the Gap.
- Taking the Lead in Preparing the Next Generation to Meet Employer Demands through College/Career Readiness; speakers: Dennis Carpenter of the Hickman Mills school district, Merlyne Starr of the University of Phoenix, Ron Sleptiza of Avila University and the Rev. Dennis Solis of CrossPoint Community Church.
