Congratulations to Alise Martiny for being honored at the World of Concrete convention in Las Vegas this week. Alise is business manager of the Greater Kansas City Building and Construction Trades Council, LMC secretary and graduate of the LMC's Mid-Level Leadership Program.

Great to see LMC co-founder Bill Dunn, Sr. at the Hispanic Contractors Association annual economic forecast luncheon, along with his son Steve Dunn, chair of JE Dunn Construction Co. Speakers at the event noted the growth of the region's construction market and the need to replenish the workforce.

The Missouri House Workforce Development and Standards Committee heard "right-to-work" bills (HBs 116 & 563) Monday and tomorrow hears HB 582 ("right-to-work" for construction). The LMC opposes "right-to-work" and urges members and supporters to contact Missouri legislators on this issue. Contact the LMC for details on the bills and House committee membership contacts.

Last week area health care benefits managers, including several from LMC members and other unions, learned about value-based health insurance design from national experts. Sponsored b y the Kansas City Quality Improvement Consortium, the College for Value Based Purchasing of Health Benefits included a presentation on a joint labor-management effort in a California school district, the benefits director for the state of Tennessee and leaders from the National Business Coalition on Health and from regional business health coalitions.
