The Labor-Management Council of Greater Kansas City

Pre-registration ends today for the Mid-America Labor/Management Conference, which begins next Sunday July 5 at Camden on the Lake. The conference has an excellent agenda; details are at www.malmc.org .

At last year's Mid-America Labor/Management Conference, speaker Marty Malloy noted a book he was co-authoring on the history of labor-management relationships between Ford and the UAW. That book is now available at mitpress.mit.edu/index.php?q=books/inside-ford-uaw-transformation. Marty, retired head of labor relations at Ford, and labor professor Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld discussed the book at the recent national Labor and Employment Relations Association meeting.

Congratulations to Kansas City, Mo.'s newly elected leaders including Mayor Sly James and council members Scott Wagner, Teresa Loar, Quintin Lucas, Katheryn Shields (former LMC board member), Lee Barnes, Scott Taylor, Heather Hall, Dan Fowler, Jermaine Reed, Jolie Justus, Alissia Canady and Kevin McManus. We look forward to working with you the next four years.

The LMC's Construction Industry Committee will not meet in July, due to the Mid-America Labor/Management Conference July 5-8. It will next meet at 8 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13 at Mark One Electric Co., Inc., though members and others will also gather at the Workforce and Diversity Summit Friday, Aug. 7 at the Builders' Training Center.

The LMC is sad to learn of the death of Kansas State Rep. Tom Burroughs' grandson. Brody Spencer Harrelson, 18 months, of Waterloo, Iowa died Wednesday, June 17. Tom is a graduate of the LMC Mid-Level Leadership Program and a great friend to the organization. We send our thoughts and prayers to Tom and his family.

The LMC reminds eligible Kansas City, Mo., voters to head to the polls tomorrow, June 23. The city's mayor and all 12 city council posts are up for election. A change in the city charter moved the election date to later in the year, so it may be easy to forget to vote.

The LMC joins the Builders' Association, JE Dunn Construction Co. and Turner Construction Co. in hosting a Workforce Development and Diversity Summit Friday, Aug. 7 at the Builders' Training Center in North Kansas City. There will be two sessions: a 7:30-9:30 a.m. session for contractors and union leaders from the Boilermakers, Bricklayers, Carpenters, Plasterers and Cement Masons, Ironworkers, Laborers, Painters, Pipefitters, Plumbers and Sprinkler Fitters; and a 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. session for contractors and union leaders from the IBEW, Elevator Constructors, Glaziers, Heat and Frost Insulators, Operating Engineers, Roofers, Sheet Metal Workers and Teamsters. •Turner Construction Co. won the bid for the Children’s Mercy Hospital administration building.

•The Kansas City Streetcar is on schedule.

•Prevailing wage will be required on KCMO demolition contracts when the demolition contractor is purchasing the building for scrap.

•With “right-to-work” vetoed in Missouri, efforts need to continue to ensure the veto is upheld with a strong margin.  The veto session is Sept. 16.

•Kansas’ budget situation continues without resolution in sight.  To address the gap, continued funding cuts for transportation are possible, as are tax measures that could affect the construction industry such as removal of sales tax exemptions, property tax limitations and more.

•WBE certification processes in KCMO continue to be discussed.

•The Don Bosco Center is holding a golf tournament honoring the Dunn and Nigro families Aug. 28 at Hillcrest Country Club.  Locals and contractors are urged to participate, and to provide Don Bosco with contacts for other organizations who have relationships with JE Dunn.  The goal is for union contractors and crafts to fill the field.  Leslie Gasser from Don Bosco will be contacting locals and contractors soon.  Foursome, sponsor and donor opportunities are available.

•M/S/C to hold a Workforce Summit on Friday, Aug. 7 at the Builders’ Training Center.  An 8-10 a.m. breakfast session will focus on letter-of-intent crafts, and a noon-2 p.m. will focus on others. 

Key issues will include the need for apprenticeship to build the workforce; the need for diversification of the workforce; and how to better plan for training opportunities to lead directly to jobs so that workers aren’t trained when jobs will not be available and so that workers will be available when contractors need them.  All crafts and contractor groups will be invited.  Details will be sent out soon.

•Jackson County’s MBE/WBE ordinance now includes veterans goals and a certification process.  VBE will be a goal though no enforcement will be applied.

•Strategic Workplace Solutions is holding a compliance training soon for workforce compliance for IBEW Local 53 and invites other crafts/contractors to participate.  Contact Colleen if interested.

The mission of the Labor-Management Council of Greater Kansas City is to enhance collaboration by solidifying trust and communication between labor and management in the community.

The LMC's Construction Industry Committee will meet at 8 a.m., Thursday, June 11, at Mark One Electric Co., Inc. The agenda will include a discussion of workforce issues.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon today vetoed HB 116/582, "right-to-work," at events in Kansas City and St. Louis. Nixon noted that virtually all of the phone calls, emails and letters his office received on the issue came from opponents. The legislature will have the opportunity to consider an override at its Sept. 16 veto session, though neither house passed the bill with the two-thirds needed for an override. It is important, though, to thank and continue to remind legislators who voted "no" to maintain that position at veto session and in the 2016 session.
