Our prayers are with the family of Craig Hydeman, business manager for Bricklayers Local 15, on the death of his father Don. Don had also been a Bricklayers leader. Visitation will be Sunday, July 12, 4-6 p.m. at Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee with burial Monday, 10 a.m. at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.

The Mid-America Labor/Management Conference had a surprise visit from Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon today. The Governor lauded the conference as the type of "common sense collaboration" the state needs. He cited labor-management cooperation as critical to the auto industry reniassance in the state, potential construction of a new St. Louis footbal stadium and other examples. MIssouri doesn't need to distraction of proposed "right-to-work" bills such as the one he vetoed, the Governor noted, but needs to focus on workforce and other strengths. Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander and Attorney General Chris Koster also noted the importance of business certainty, the need for strategic investment and continued labor-management collaboration as vital to the state's economic growth. Conference attendees also heard about "Joy: A Key to Leaderhip" from an inspiring Rick Gregory and an afternoon full of workshops. Congratulations to former Mid-Level Leadership participant Randy Hopkins, who was named Rockhurst University Chief of Security. Randy had been a Kansas City, Mo., police officer. He succeeds Bill Evans, who has worked to make the campus safer for more than 20 years.
