A reminder that the LMC's Construction Industry Committee won't meet on the 2nd Thursday in July, July 14, due to the Mid-America Labor/Management Conference. The committee resumes its regular meeting schedule at 8 a.m. Aug. 11 at Mark One Electric Co., Inc.

Congratulations to Brandy McCombs, president of IBC, Inc., who will be one of 2016's Kansas City Business Journal Women Who Mean Business.

Rockhurst University will hold a memorial service for its former president the Rev. Robert Weis, S.J., on Sept. 13, 10:45 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church across the street from the campus. Fr. Weiss was president when the LMC was formed and based at Rockhurst.

Congrats to Mitch Rowley, new business manager for Laborers Local 1290, and thanks to Mark Nidiffer, longtime Local 1290 business manager who retired. We appreciate Mark's support and look forward to working with Mitch.

Congrats to Steven Miller, who completes his service on the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission July 1. Kansas Citian Miller will have served seven years, including two as chair, leading many changes in the department and state transportation policies. We are grateful for his service and for his frequently reaching out to the LMC for input and support.

Jackson County Executive Frank White invites you to Longview Lake Shelter #13, 9890 Longview Road, Kansas City, MO 64134, for the county's annual 4th of July Fireworks Show. The LMC mourns the Hon. Candy Ruff, former Kansas State Representative who died last week. Candy represented Leavenworth. She was a strong supporter of the LMC, frequently offering solid advice as well as legislative leadership. Her visitation is today, Monday 5-8 p.m. and another session Tuesday at the same time. Services are at the Davis Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. at Leavenworth Baptist Church.

You can join the networking, golfing and other activities by sponsoring, playing, volunteering and/or donating to the tournament. Late LMC Board member Craig Whitaker helped found the tournament in 1997 to encourage labor-management relationship-building, and it’s been successful ever since.

The LMC remembers the Rev. Robert Weiss, S.J., past president of Rockhurst University, who died yesterday at age 91. Fr. Weiss was president during the LMC's founding and early years and provided crucial support. He also led Rockhurst's expansion of its School of Management and health care degrees. We will share details of arrangements as they become available.

•Work has begun on the baseball academy.  The streetcar has exceeded expectations and movement is already underway to extend its route.  The industry, city and community will need to make a major education effort to generate support for a new airport; KCADC and the GKC Chamber are already discussing a joint effort.

•Comment has been received on the KCMO PIEA proposal for a prevailing wage policy.  One hundred percent coverage is desired, though the 50% rule is a start; three projects underway are using the 50% standard and all bids on one of them came in with prevailing wage.

•KCMO is developing a new disparity study.

•The Missouri legislature ended its 2016 regular session.  No bills we opposed were passed, though few we supported completed the process.  Transportation funding, Medicaid expansion and additional data center incentives made progress but did not pass.  Committee members are urged to contact Gov. Jay Nixon and ask him to sign the design-build for local government bill, HB 2376.  The bill has broad support.

•Kansas will hold a special session to address education funding beginning June 23; transportation funding has taken significant reductions and more are possible.

•The South KC Alliance is holding a session on what amenities are needed for the Cerner project at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 14.  Check www.southkcalliance.org to RSVP and get more details.

•The Construction Committee will NOT meet on Thursday, July 14, due to the Mid-America Labor/Management Conference.  The next meeting will be Aug. 11.
