The Labor-Management Council of Greater Kansas City

The LMC mourns the passing of Judy Hunt. Judy was the wife of strong LMC supporter Graham Hunt (Financial Counselors) and past board chair of LMC member United Way of Greater Kansas City. She was an outstanding community leader and supporter of those in need. Memorial services will be Thursday, Dec. 1, 3 pm. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Meyer Blvd. and Worn Terrace, KCMO. The family requests no flowers and suggests contributions to Children's Mercy Hospital in her memory.

The LMC's Construction Industry Committee will next meet at 8 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 8 at Mark One Electric Co., Inc.

 •Thanks to Rosana Privitera Biondo and Mark One Electric Co., Inc. for hosting.

•Jim Albano is a new Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Commissioner in the KC office, replace Pat Dunn who retired.

•KCMO has extensive projects underway.  Ruben Lara has joined the city’s contract compliance efforts from the Missouri State Auditor’s office.

•The KCMO downtown hotel project is in the planning stages; depending upon financing, work will begin in the Spring.

•Each of the issues endorsed by the LMC in the Nov. 8 election were successful: opposition to the KCMO light rail initiative petition, support for levy increases and bonds for libraries and for the Smithville School District, support for Kansas City, Kansas Public School bonds, Johnson County tax for a new courthouse and renwal of Jackson County’s COMBAT tax.

•The need for a new KCI was explained at the NICE Awards Luncheon.  Leaders in business and labor can build support by educating their members/employees on the need for a new KCI.  No action is expected until after April 2017.  NICE produced a video on the topic for the luncheon:  http://nice-kc.com/?page=about-videos.

•Alex Gonzalez has organized a group of bilingual union craft representatives to speak at high schhols, among other activities.   The group needs more volunteers and will talk with NICE as well.

 •Discussion was held and will continue on planning for the 2017 Missouri legislative session, at which “right-to-work,” prevailing wage and other issues will be prominent.

•iBuild is May 4 and is seeking sponsors, volunteers and schools to participate.  The next NICE Annual Awards luncheon will be Oct. 17.

•The KCMO City Energy Project Advisory Committee ended its work.  Implementation rules for private sector energy usage reporting, set to begin next year, remain unclear.

•The Mission, Ks. driveway tax case had oral arguments heard by the Kansas Supreme Court.  A decision is expected soon on the Appeals Court ruling that the tax is unconstitutional.

Mid-Level Leadership participants learned about building trust at last night's session. An overview of recent research on how the brain works, the impact of trust on organizational performance and techniques for building trust were shared, as were the participants' own experiences. Stephen Covey's The Speed of Trust was also cited as a source for learning more about trust-building.
