•Thanks to Rosana Privitera Biondo and Mark One Electric Co., Inc. for hosting.
•The landslide margin of the vote to build a new KCI testified to the work of the committee and the broader business/labor community. The CIC began discussing the need for a modernized KCI more than five years ago, and nearly all committee members were active leaders in the campaign. Project developers Edgemoor are interested in continuing to work with the committee through the process.
•The Cerner project is letting grading packages and will begin bids for phases III and IV soon.
•JE Dunn has been awarded the Johnson County Courthouse project. Construction is expected to begin in 2019. That project will be a great asset for the County and citizens who use the courthouse.
•The downtown KCMO hotel project now hopes to have financing wrapped up by the end of the year. The construction schedule will be compressed to meet convention booking needs. The new flag Loews is more engaged financially and otherwise than the previous flag, which should help the project.
•Smithville School District is moving forward with new school approved in a bond issue earlier this year. JE Dunn is project manager. The project is not 100% union, but the portions being done by union crafts are ahead of schedule and under budget.
•Missouri is requesting prevailing wage reports by Dec. 1. All contractors are urged to meet that deadline. The KCI project will be using Missouri prevailing wages.
•Volunteers are sought for the next Construction Summit planning committee. Topics will include health care and technology.
•Missouri Rep. TJ Berry will be the next Clay County Economic Development Council executive director. He has begun working with the agency and will take the new position after the legislative session ends. It is expected that the industry will be able to work well with him.
•An attorney with construction industry understanding is running for an open Missouri House seat in the St. Louis area (84th district): Brad Baker.
•The committee will invite newly elected Unified Government Mayor David Alvey to a future meeting, and will also invite each of the KCMO mayoral candidates throughout the next year.
•KCMO’s recent disparity study makes several recommendations now under review before being sent to the Council for consideration. Those recommendations addressing the statutory agencies should be supported, at least for discussion by the Council.
•iBuild will be May 3, with move-in May 2 at Bartle Hall. Judges, volunteers and booth sponsors are being sought as there may be a significant increase in student participation from 2,200 to as many as 4,000 with more schools using Crayons to CAD and promises of increased involvement from several districts including Kansas City Public Schools.
•The Builders’ Association and Mechanical Contractors Association are sponsoring an address by James Benham, “Construction Disruption,” lunch and training center tour Nov. 29 at the Builders’ Training Center. Benham will discuss far-reaching impacts of technology that construction is experiencing and will experience in the future.
