The Labor-Management Council of Greater Kansas City

The Construction Industry Committee next meets at 8 a.m., Thursday, April 11 at Mark One Electric Co., Inc. EDC-KC CEO Bob Langenkamp is scheduled to speak with the group.

The LMC sends condolences to the family and co-workers of the Carpenters' member who died at the construction site of the KCMO convention hotel.

LMC members are having a busy Spring. Rockhurst University hosted an address by former Kansas City Chiefs' quarterback Joe Montana who provided insights on leadership, football and the unique relationship between centers and quarterbacks, as well as KCMO Mayor Sly James' final state of the city address. A few upcoming events include:

•Working Families Friends has three fundraising events: April 6 a Union Spring Fling Shopping Event at UAW Local 31, 500 Kindelbarger Road, KCK, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Texas Holdem Poker Tournament, April 26, 5:30-10:30 p.m.; and its Golf Tournament June 17 at Loch Lloyd. •UAW Local 31 is also hosting its annual Retiree Classic Car Cruise June 8, 1-5 p.m.

•The annual Seven Days: Make a Ripple, Change the World event organized by last year's Anniversary Celebration keynote speaker Mindy Corporon is April 9-15. A luncheon for the business community is on Friday, April 12 at Grace & Holy Trinty Cathedral. Details at www.givesevendays.org .

The LMC sends best wishes for a full recovery to Missouri State Rep. Rebecca Roeber, Lee's Summit, who was seriously injured in a car accident and remains hospitalized.

Congrats to the city of Kansas City, MO., Mayor Sly James, KCI Director Pat Klein, the GKC Building & Construction Trades Council, the GKC Chamber and Civic Council, Edgemoor and CWC and many others who made possible the groundbreaking Monday for #BuildKCI.

Congrats to Thomas F. Whittaker, JE Dunn Construction Co., past LMC Co-Chair and honoree, for his election as 2019-2020 President of The Kansas City Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). He joined the Chapter Board in 2009 and became an Officer in 2013. He succeeds John Branham, P.E., CEO of Branco Enterprises, Inc., who remains an officer of the Chapter. Tom served as Chairman of the Kansas City Chapter’s sister organization, The Builders’ Association, in 2007 and is Chief Legal Officer and Executive Vice President of JE Dunn Construction Co.
Other board members include Andy Heitmann from LMC member Turner Construction Co, Mid-Level Leadership graduate Steve Julo of Centric Projects, LLC, and Cody Showalter from LMC member McCownGordon Construction.
Don Greenwell , LMC treasurer, is Executive Director of the Kansas City Chapter, AGC, which represents 120 firms and is part of the AGC of America, the largest and oldest national construction trade association in the United States. Construction Industry Steering Team Summary of Minutes

•Last month’s discussion with Jon Stephens, PortKC, was constructive and helpful.

•Updates on the implementation of changes in Missouri’s prevailing wage law.  The MODOLIR website now has, by county, wages computed under the new system.  The MODOLIR budget proposal has passed the House Budget Committee with funding for additional enforcement personnel.

•The US DOL plans to survey metro counties in Missouri for updated Davis-Bacon rates.  There was discussion of how to access information on current and planned HUD projects in the area.

•Bills of interest in Missouri include SB 168, which would limit school districts’ ability to specify the use of materials in issuing construction bids; a bill from Sen. Cierpiot regarding CAFO rules; a mechanical contractor licensing bill, HB 376, opposed by the Plumbers; workforce development and transportation project bonding proposed by the Governor are stuck or dead in the legislature.

•iBuild is April 18; reception and move-in is April 17 at Bartle Hall.  Volunteers are needed and booths are available.  An increase in high school participants is expected.

•Bob Langenkamp, director of KCMO EDC, is tentatively scheduled to speak at the April meeting.
