The LMC's Construction Industry Committee next meets at 8 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 14 at Mark One Electric Co. Jon Stephens, PortKC executive director, will speak.

Mid-Level Leadership Program participants learned effective communication and leadership skills at the Oct. 23, 2019 session led by Terry Stone, longtime labor-management consultant and North Kansas City School Board.   On Oct. 30, they learned about building trust from Stephanie Haynes, Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service commissioner. The LMC mourns the passing of friends former Missouri State Sen. Yvonne Wilson and Ken Hamm. Sen. Wilson supported our mission during her legislative career. Ken worked with us on the early Anniversary Celebration and Awards Dinners when they were at the Westin, then also when he (and the event) moved to Argosy. Both will be missed.

The LMC is saddened by the death of Scott Forbes, retired Financial Secretary of Pipefitters Local 533. Scott was a great supporter of the LMC and its mission. He will be missed. Services include a visitation from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 at Mount Moriah, 10507 Holmes, Kansas City, Mo., and funeral Friday, Oct. 25 from 1-2 p.m. at the same location. Our condolences to Scott's family and to Local 533.

The fall portion of the LMC's 2019-20 Mid-Level Leadership Program at Rockhurst University is half complete. Check Mid-Level Leadership 2019 under Photo Albums at left for pics of sessions led by Erin Standley and Jim Maloney. Erin explored differences in learning and communication styles using the Myers-Briggs test; Jim, who has been teaching for the program for more than 25 years, taught on the Phenomena of Communication and the Phenomena of Leadership.

•M/S/C to approve financial statement subject to audit

•M/S/C to request the Kansas City, Mo., City Council hold Ordinance 190665 until further discussion with the city’s Workforce Board, coordination with disparity study and interested constituents.

•Reminder of the Public Officials Reception Oct. 24. Sponsorships are up over 2018 and more are being sought. Provisions have been made to comply with the state of Missouri’s new ethics law.

•Possible speakers discussed for the 2020 Anniversary Celebration and Awards Dinner April 30.

•M/S/C to increase per table cost for the Anniversary Celebration and Awards Dinner by $100, individual ticket price by $10 and the supporter sponsorships by $25; and to increase the foursome cost for the Craig Whitaker Memorial Golf Tournament by $50, per individual by $15 and the hole sponsor cost by $25. Both changes will take effect with the 2020 events.

•M/S/C to pursue holding a sporting clays tournament to build relationships and generate funds during 2020.

•M/S/C to consider a forum for members on Medicaid expansion in Missouri and in Kansas.

•Discussion of bringing the labor-management community together to discuss engagement in the affordable housing issue.

•The next board meeting will be either Jan. 15 or 16, 2020, depending upon board poll.

•Get well wishes to our scheduled speaker, Jon Stephens, who is ill today.  We have rescheduled is visit for Nov. 14.

•Discussion of compliance with Missouri’s new prevailing wage law, and its impacts.  Contractor reporting is an essential component to an accurate wage order.  The University of Missouri system is limiting apprentices credit to those in a registered program, and Jackson County is considering a similar approach.

•Affordable housing continues to be a challenging issue.  Some cities have had success with single-family construction on smaller lots; cities can help that trend with zoning variances.

•The LMC will offer new KCMO Mayor Lucas assistance with finding good candidates for board and commission appointments, particularly at economic incentive agencies.

•The committee expressed appreciation for retiring KCMO City Manager Troy Schulte’s work.

•Local election boards are searching for election day judges for the 2020 cycle.  Judges do get paid and is an opportunity for retirees, unemployed and those interested in the political process.

•The NICE annual awards luncheon features a discussion construction workforce development with Facebook and Turner Construction. The presenting sponsor will be Hardhat in Hand Turner.
