The Labor-Management Council of Greater Kansas City

Due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in our area, the Labor-Management Council has postponed our 41st Anniversary Celebration and 21st Awards Dinner scheduled for Aug. 13. Our new date in tentatively set for May 13, 2021. We regret any inconvenience this causes you.

All reservations made for sponsorships, tables, seats and advertising to date will be held for the May 13 date, so if you have already made reservations and/or paid you are now set for the new date as well. Later this year we will provide an opportunity for everyone else to make reservations for the new date.

The top priority for the LMC is the safety and health of our members and the community. Look for announcements soon an updated schedule and changes for the Mid-Level Leadership Program. As of today, the following events remain on our schedule at the previously announced dates:

•The first LMC Sporting Clay Shoot, Sept. 17, Saddle & Sirloin (see registration form below)

•We will be partnering with BOMA-KC on the Public Officials Reception Oct. 22 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. A much larger space at the Center has been reserved to allow for social distancing and other changes to avoid long, packed lines for check-in and refreshments.

The LMC mourns the death of former Kansas State Sen. Dick Bond. Sen. Bond was a very effective leader, an advocate for collaboration in the legislative process and community and a gentleman.

After a slight rain delay, the 23rd Annual Craig Whitaker Memorial LMC Golf Tournament carried on successfully as the skies gradually cleared yesterday morning at Oakwood Country Club.

The tournament also adapted to the threat of COVID-19 with changes aimed at maximizing player and club staff safety. The 16 foursomes scheduled enjoyed golf, contests, prizes and a bit of safe networking as part of the LMC’s mission to enhance collaboration and trust between labor and management and the community. JE Dunn Construction Co.’s foursome took first place, and JE Dunn player Andrew Petersen also won the longest drive. Second place went to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City, while Whitley Construction Co. took third on a scorecard playoff after tying with American Century and Teamsters Local 838/Signatory Bottlers. David Sofer of the American Century foursome took the Nearest-to-the-Pin and Julie Peterson of the Heavy Construction Laborers Local 663 team the Women’s Longest Drive.

BMO Taft-Hartley Trust Co. was the luncheon sponsor. Eagle sponsors included American Century, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City, St. Louis-Kansas City Carpenters Regional Council, Fire Fighters Local 42, Heavy Construction Laborers Local 663, IBEW Local 304, JE Dunn Construction Co., Painters District Council 3, Pipefitters Local 533, Plumbers Local 8, Stephens/Heffner Financial Partners, Turner Construction Co. and Whitley Construction Co. Hole sponsors were Arnold Newbold Sollars & Hollins, Bricklayers Local 15, FCI Advisors and SMACNA-KC. Hole Card Sponsor was Strategic Workplace Solutions.

Prize donations came from Rick Blevins, Teamsters Local 838, who donated all beverages and oil changes from Christian Brothers and Cable-Dahmer Cadillac, Oakwood Country Club, American Century, BMO Taft-Hartley Trust Co., Humana and Stephens/Heffner Financial Partners.

Key volunteer support came from Greg Davey, Builders’ Association; Greg Lever, National Institute for Construction Excellence; Emilia Rivera, E&K; and Mary Jacobi.

Players also enjoyed contests from Dixon Golf and the Bishop Miege High School Robotics team.

The LMC is sad to report the unexpected death of Tony Anastasia of United Healthcare. Tony worked with the local labor-management community to share United's services, and became a friend to many. He will be missed.

•Thanks to Greg Davey and the Builders’ Association for virtual hosting.

•M/S/C to approve the proposed 2020-21 budget.

•M/S/C to approve the Financial Report.

•Congress recently passed a bill to include COVD-19 affected first responders for disability benefits.

•Local 42 has not yet reached a contract with the Jackson County Prosecutor’s office; federal mediators are now assisting.

•The Mid-America Labor/Management Conference has been cancelled for 2020 and will next take place July 11-14, 2021 at Camden on the Lake.

•The Craig Whitaker Memorial LMC Golf Tournament is scheduled for July 27 with participation ahead of last year. Safety precautions will be taken and touchless registration and raffle sales are being set up with assistance of Greg Davey.

•The 41st Anniversary & Awards Dinner is scheduled for Aug. 13; printed invitations have been sent. However if COVID-19 conditions continue to be difficult a postponement is possible.

•The first Sporting Clay Shoot is set for Sept. 17. Reservations have begun to come in. As an outside event, safe procedures should be easier to institute.

•The Mid-Level Leadership Program is expected to be held likely with just one in-person session for the fall and at least four for the spring. Arrangements are being finalized, with a limit of 10 participants.

•BOMA will co-present the Public Officials Reception scheduled for Oct. 22 with the LMC.

•At the July LMC board meeting, an officer and board slate for 2020-21 will be set as well as election procedure if the Anniversary and Awards Dinner, which serves as the annual meeting, requires a different format or later date.

•M/S/C to nominate Alise Martiny for reelection as Secretary.

•M/S/C to nominate Don Greenwell for reelection as Treasurer.

•M/S/C to nominate Clarence Brown to a labor board position.

•M/S/C to nominate Charles Onwuche to a labor board position.

•The next Board meeting will be at 2 p.m., (notice time change) Wednesday, Oct. 7 likely via Zoom.

•M/S/C to adjourn at 10:15 a.m.

The Craig Whitaker Memorial LMC Golf Tournament is one week from today, July 27, 9 a.m. tee-off at Oakwood Country Club. Social distancing needs generate a few changes, but the tournament still provides an excellent opportunity for building cooperation. Contact [email protected] for details.

The LMC supports Yes on 2 for Missouri Medicaid expansion Aug. 4. Medicaid expansion will bring back Missourians tax dollars to the state, create new direct and indirect jobs, reduce the cost-shifting that now boosts the costs of those with insurance, generate a healthier workforce and increase state revenues.

The LMC is sad to report the passing of Robert W. Welch, retired business agent from Pipefitters Local 533. Bob was a great friend to and supporter of the LMC and its mission, as well as active in the community. He will be greatly missed. His son, Robert A. Welch, is now a business agent for Local 533.

The family requests donations to the Ararat Shrine Temple Transportation Fund, 5100 Ararat Dr., Kansas City, Mo., 64129 in his memory.

For the safety of our participants in this time of COVID-19, the 2020 Mid-America Labor/Management Conference Aug. 20-23 has been cancelled. We are already at work on the 2021 conference, scheduled for July 11-14.

Camden on the Lake is providing those who have made hotel reservations the option of staying on those dates at the conference rate. Otherwise you will need to cancel your reservation to avoid being charged.

If you have already registered for the conference and paid, we will be in touch soon with options for you.

The Planning Committee worked to create a safe and valuable conference, but the increasing health concerns of COVID-19 led us to this decision. Thanks to those who responded to our survey; you input factored into the decision.
