•Session #17 of the Construction Summit:
Efforts continue and will accelerate after the results of the November elections.
•Presentation by Wes Rogers, Missouri State Representative and candidate for the Kansas City, Mo., City Council in 2023. The election Tuesday resulted in a net gain of 3 Democrats in the Missouri House, legalization of recreational marijuana and amending the state Constitution to allow the legislature to increase the required percent of budget for police funding. Jon Patterson from the KC area is likely to be the next Majority leader, and like the next speaker Dean Plocher is conservative but open-minded and willing to work with others. He also is an advocate for the KC region and a person of integrity.
The city council race is a great learning opportunity on city issues. Key priorities include broadband access, which is problem not just in rural areas but in some parts of KCMO as well. It’s one of many areas that the state and city can work together better and improving that relationship would be a priority. Regarding education, traditional public schools are a strength in the Northland and Kansas City Public Schools are seeing improvement; KCPS works reasonably well with charter schools as opposed to St. Louis, where there is strong conflict between traditional and charter schools so the state has had to settle those issues.
•Two bond Kansas City, Mo., bond issues endorsed by the LMC passed with strong margins on Tuesday. The amendment allowing the state to increase its requirement for KCMO police funding, which the LMC opposed, passed.
Gov. Kelly was selected in Kansas, and Mike Kelly is the new Johnson County Commission chair. The county leadership presents great opportunities for LMC members. A list of all the area’s newly elected officials is included on the back of the agenda. Committee members are encouraged to contact and build relationships with the new officials if they haven’t already. Missouri Senate leadership will be decided today. The first batch of pre-filed bills in Missouri will be available by the next committee meeting.
