•Session #17 of the Construction Summit:
Efforts continue and will accelerate after the results of the November elections, particularly working with the Fair Contracting Alliance.
•Rudy Chavez, Missouri AFL-CIO Missouri Works program, provided an update on the Apprentice Ready Program. The next group will begin Jan. 20. Eight members of the first class are apprentices. Rudy thanked the apprenticeship coordinators for their participation and will keep the group updated on the program.
•Manny Abarca provided an update on the Fair Contract Alliance. The FCA held its first major event last week drawing 60 people including 17 contractors and three municipalities. The focus is on investigations, fair contracting ordinances and generating membership from trades, contractors and others. The results of investigations are sometimes addressed with discussion and negotiation, sometimes sent to regulatory agencies and some for private litigation.
Manny was congratulated on his election to the Jackson County Legislature.
•Greg Lever presented an update on NICE. Programs with schools are returning to unperson though excellent resources developed during the pandemic are available at the NICE website. NICE is developing a Construction Careers booklet and seeks materials from each trade to include for distribution to students, teachers, counselors and parents. Participation in the Middle School Design Program (Crayons to CAD, though a new name is being developed) is more than 600 students bouncing back from the pandemic when there were fewer participants. iBuild will be April 28 at Bartle Hall, with a reception April 27 at which elected officials and candidates will be invited as well as industry.
•Pre-filing has started in the Missouri legislature. A few bills—county option “right-to-work,” unemployment compensation changes, historic tax credit changes, project labor agreement expansion, mechanical contractor licensing are among the bills already filed. Both the Senate and House will have new leadership.
•Alise Martiny was congratulated for her recognition as the first Tradeswoman Build Nations Lifetime Achievement Award from the national Building Trades at the Oct. 29 Trades Women Build Nations national conference.
